What's New in Cosmetic Dentistry?

What's New in Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is constantly changing. We live in an age of tremendous advancements in both the Science and the Art of cosmetic dentistry. And in a sense, everything done in your mouth now, needs to be aesthetic. We live in an age where most of us no longer are willing to tolerate something ugly and hideous in our mouths, just for the sake of something functional.

In the past few years I have monitored the development and the success of some of our newer materials for dental crowns, porcelain veneers and implant crowns. For decades cosmetic dentistry has had a lot of trade offs. Meaning, that in the past you had to choose between something white or mildly aesthetic, or something durable. Now the strength of our white materials has finally reached levels where there are no longer any compromises to make those type of decisions.

With the proven success of dental crowns like Lava, Brux Zir, and other Zirconia type crowns, we are seeing the opportunity to place a white tooth anywhere in your mouth and have no limitations on the strength of it. Other materials like eMax are also providing amazing aesthetic results for front and back teeth.

While there are advancing materials for porcelain veneers, much of the final beauty and natural results come more from the thoughtful planning process and the technicians, than the actual material itself. To create amazing looking front teeth still depends upon master skills at design and ceramics. In our office we have a proven method to create amazing results! First we discuss exactly what changes you are wanting, then I create templates or simulations (like computer smile imaging) to create a representation of the new smile design. After that, you and I evaluate if that’s the look you are wanting.

From there we move from concept to prototype. A wax design is made, and then that design is built into your temporary smile. Here you can finally see it on yourself and decide what nuances you need changed. After this you will meet my master ceramist, Peter. He will help design the fine details that create an amazing, but still natural result. When the new porcelain veneers are fitted, you already know what they will look like, so there are no surprises.

So what’s new in cosmetic dentistry? Everything is new and better, and yet beautiful results still depend upon the old mainstays: a good conversation about what you want, a thoughtful design incorporating all of the features that affect your beauty and long-term results, and then the artful execution by experts.

Don’t be misled by all of the “new”things in cosmetic dentistry, amazing results are still created just for you, one patient at a time. When you are ready for your new smile, contact us to start your personalized journey.

Are you ready for a Smile Makeover?

Smiles change lives and attract others to us

Look at who is smiling and who is not. There is power in a big smile.

In this picture you’ll see some great smiles. But look more closely… not everyone is smiling. Now take a look at your own smile..which group do you fall into? You see, if you love your smile (whether you’ve had a smile makeover or teeth whitening) it shows.

If this were a social gathering which people in the picture would you be talking to? I’d put down a large bet that most people would gravitate toward those with the really big smiles.Research has shown that when others smile brightly, it makes us feel better about ourselves. Think about that for a minute…a smile is a powerful thing.

Now think about the person in the photo NOT smiling. What are the subliminal messages that may be radiating from them? (I’m unhappy, I’m not very confident, I don’t feel interesting, I don’t enjoy life…) When you meet someone who doesn’t smile at you, how do you feel about yourself?

When you have an amazing smile (some get theirs from porcelain veneers), you make an impact on the people around you. People want to be around you, people want to talk to you, people want to know what you have to say. When you smile at them they feel good. They feel like they are interesting…or attractive. That’s powerful!

So, take a minute-look in the mirror and see what type of smile you have. If you are not showing your amazing smile, then please contact us today. As a cosmetic dentist in Denver, we can help you release that inner power and enjoy those around you!

The Power of Cosmetic Dentistry

Release the power of smiles

Your Smile is POWERFUL!

The right plan for cosmetic dentistry takes you smoothly to the end result which is an amzing smile. When you get there you will be surprised at how good it feels. As a cosmetic dentist in Denver, I meet people all the time who are either underwhelmed with their smiles, or simply outright dislike them.

I am surprised at how many people I meet who do not like having their picture taken, or even don’t smile in the slightest when a picture is taken.

Contrast that to one of my patients who recently finished up some porcelain veneers. She started with a smile she really hated, and like those I mentioned at the start of this piece, she would not smile, nor show her teeth. In reality, she did not know how to smile, because she avoided it at all costs.

You would think she had been abducted by aliens if you met her now. She smiles a LOT, and frankly has a new found amount of self-confidence. You she she was already successful, but was embarrassed to show it. Once that internal geyser of confidence had a way to get out-it was powerful!

If you run out of the room when someone pulls out their camera, or just quickly seal your lips together, it’s time for a new way to live. Contact us today and see how much is inside you that’s ready to be released!

Ask Dental Questions

Cosmetic dentistry makes you happy

Asking great questions is one of the best ways to make good decisions about cosmetic dentistry. As a Denver cosmetic dentist, I have practiced dentistry for over twenty years.

I participate in some online forums where patients ask their questions to doctors. What I find interesting is that they ought to be asking these questions FIRST to their own dentist.

Candidly, I see a lot of issues that come up about cosmetic dentistry procedures that ought to have been addressed BEFORE a patient has undergone a treatment.

My staff and I make great efforts to discuss what will happen ahead of time. I don’t like surprises, I know they don’t either. If you find you have some doubts about an upcoming cosmetic dentistry procedure or if you have a number of unanswered questions, then I suggest STOP immediately and don’t do anything else, or take a next step until you get solid answers.

Much of the success of cosmetic dentistry starts with outstanding communication. By the way, feel free to ask me questions about common cosmetic dentistry procedures like: teeth whitening, smile makeovers or porcelain veneers-you’ll be glad you asked!

Do Porcelain Veneers Ever Come Off? (Part One)

Do Porcelain Veneers Ever Come Off?

I’ve heard patients comment about veneers they have had “come off”. Frankly, there is no good reason why veneers ought to pop off. In fact, it’s a harbinger of other bad things to come.

Porcelain veneers, when they are crafted correctly, are extremely strong, durable and stay in place reliably.

There are two main reasons why porcelain veneers come off- neither of them good…

I’ll go over the first reason today, and then discuss the other reason tomorrow.

One. The veneer wasn’t adhered correctly. The process of cementing, or bonding or adhering the veneer to your tooth is very technically demanding. There are many steps, the process is unforgiving. It requires an uncompromising technique. It is possible that during the adhesion process something goes wrong. While this could be possible for a great cosmetic dentist, it is highly unlikely, because they would notice if something isn’t going right. While possible, a great cosmetic dentist may have this happen only once or twice in a career. IF the worst happened that your veneer somehow came off, an experienced cosmetic dentist would be mortified. They would fix it quickly, and permanently. They would feel bad, and it would be obvious to you. If on the other hand, in the most likely scenario, you veneers were adhered without this immaculate technique, it could come off. If a veneer pops off one day later-it simply wasn’t adhered correctly. In this practice a staff member or even the dentist might say, “oh it happens all the time, don’t worry about it”. If it happens all the time or is in some way routine, then politely get yourself out of that office and into one of a more experienced cosmetic dentist.

You really shouldn’t lose any sleep worrying about your veneers coming off. In my experience, veneers work well, and they work well for a long time.

Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for Part Two of this series.

(or if you’ve had a veneer come off, you may want to schedule a visit with us so we can check your veneers and make sure you won’t have more problems-contact us today).

Types of Porcelain Veneers

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Denver cosmetic dentist Dr. Scott Greenhalgh, DDS makes porcelain veneers

Porcelain Veneers

For patients, I think there is a lot of confusion about porcelain veneers.

I participate in some web forums where patients ask questions about cosmetic dentistry and other dental procedures. The advertisers for veneers (brands like: Lumineers, Vivaneers, DuraThin veneers, No Prep veneers and others) do a great job about creating a lot of buzz. There is no doubt that porcelain veneers can produce amazing results. But…there is no brand that fits everyone, all the time.

My advice to patients thinking about veneers: don’t get too focused in on a certain brand of veneers. Focus more on researching a great cosmetic dentist. Look at the before and after photos in their smile gallery. Frankly, you can tell a lot about that cosmetic dentistry practice by the quality and quantity of beautiful cosmetic dentistry photos. Look for clear, crisp photos. Look for an example that looks like you. Then look at the after results. Do the results look great, and do they look natural?

A great cosmetic dentist can help you find the right veneer option for you. After that evaluation, THEN your cosmetic dentist can recommend the right type of veneers.

How to get Great Results with Teeth Whitening?

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

The longer I deliver cosmetic dentistry in Denver, I find that the best results come less from the products (for example, Zoom Teeth whitening, or Nite-White teeth whitening gel), and MORE from great communication with our patients.

For example, earlier today, I received an online question from a cosmetic dentistry patient in another state. She had Zoom Teeth Whitening and wound up with a fairly serious chemical burn on the gum of her front tooth.  While she will probably be fine, I’m sure it was scary and alarming to have a big white ulcer on the gum next to her front tooth.

Candidly, anytime you are dealing with the human body, there is a (small) potential for a complication. I find that these surprises or disappointments can almost be 100% avoided by good communication before, during and after the procedure.

Later today, I had the chance to see one of my favorite patients who is starting to whiten his teeth. We talked for quite a few minutes about how to stay comfortable during the process and also a lot about what exactly to expect.

After more than twenty years as a cosmetic dentist in Denver, I have found we consistently get great results, by first, seeking to understand exactly what our patients want, then tailoring one of the many options to deliver results. Then we tell our patients what to expect each step of the way.

Oh, and we encourage constant input and try to have great accessibility to any questions they have along the way.

Problems and disappointments with teeth whitening (or other cosmetic dentistry procedures like porcelain veneers, bonding, or smile makeovers), can be avoided!

Answers about Cosmetic Dentistry

Denver Cosmetic Dentist-Scott Greenhalgh, DDS

In cosmetic dentistry in denver, a huge part of my practice is about communication with my patients: what they are expecting from me, what will happen next in their care, what it will look like, what to be concerned about. I think the art of cosmetic dentistry is part making beautiful smiles, and the other part helping people feel really confident and assured on their journey.

I am spending some time answering patients’ questions on another website. There is a LOT of misinformation out there. I see a lot of uncertainty and disappointment in the experiences of other patients. At this stage in my cosmetic dentistry career, I am getting more and more patients who have had some sort of veneers or a smile makeover completed, but have disappointments or problems that need to be corrected.

The key to cosmetic dentistry is to have clear communication about what is going to happen, and what the results will be. As a patient, having very clear expectations and explaining them to the cosmetic dentist and his staff is the place to start. State very clearly what you want to change or improve. I see a lot of people who seem to want a certain treatment (for example,  Lumineers or Zoom teeth whitening), but don’t get stuck on a brand name, think about what type of change it made and why you want that.

As a cosmetic dentist, my job is to listen well, and then find the most direct, comfortable  way possible to deliver what you’ve asked for. As summer is on us, now is the time to see if your smile is everything you’ve imagined.

If not, let’s start the conversation.

With great listening and clear conversations, you will get impressive results!
