Are No Prep Veneers or Lumineers for Everyone?

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

Veneers are great, they change smiles and lives. Over twenty years as a cosmetic dentist in Denver, I have placed MANY veneers. In fact I have fixed veneers from other offices as well.

One of my partnering services SmileVision sent me this nice summary about the current trends with veneers. The following are some advantages & disadvantages of minimal-prep or no-prep veneer cases, which dentists must be ready to deal with:

Advantages:
- Patients like the idea of not prepping making cases are easier
- Temporaries are often unnecessary, lowering the cost of treatment
- Restorations bond strongly to enamel, so these stay put
- Procedures are reversible if the results are not satisfactory
- There is minimal damage to the dental pulp

Disadvantages:
- Esthetic changes are limited
- Limited potential for color changes due to thin material
- Difficulties manufacturing, inserting and bonding the restorations
- Patient complaints about excessive bulk
- Flat esthetics due lack of room to create deep embrasures

These are the challenges each dentist must manage when making decisions about how to proceed with cosmetic cases. Success will never bee 100%, no matter which techniques are selected. Everything works in the right situation and nothing works in the wrong one.

So… the science of cosmetic dentistry really has to do with interpreting which type of veneers will work best for which patients. Some patients just want a simple improvement-these patients CAN be candidates for the no-prep veneers or Lumineers.

But… the longer I practice dentistry in Denver, I have found that largely the patients that come to see me want beautiful, close to perfect smiles, with a really natural look (visit our before and after photo gallery).

Have you ever met someone who just had teeth that were bigger than life? Or some sort of dental work that just jumped right off of their face? I think these cases are mistakes for both the patient and for cosmetic dentistry in general.

So, like a lot of things in life, one size does NOT fit all. If you are considering veneers, then first you need to find the right the right cosmetic dentist that understands the differences, and can give YOU a great explanation for what would work best for you. Contact us today, and let us help you make the right choice and get he smile you’ve been waiting for!

In Cosmetic Dentistry, it ALL Matters

Friday, April 9th, 2010

I am often ranting to my staff, or to my wife, Tracy (who just wrote her first article in Examiner.com- check it out!). I rant from time to time about some of the things I am going to do when I have time.

For instance, when I retire, I want to go to the gym for two hours a day, ride my bike like crazy, try more hot yoga, play racquetball with my boys, travel whenever possible and go to lots of hockey games.
I also rant about things in dentistry, or cosmetic dentistry. I was ranting today about one day I’m going to write a book full of all the things I have learned about veneers, smile makeovers, teeth whitening, and all of the rest.
Really what this book will be about is the thought processes behind creating excellence. I decided I am going to call this book “Every #*!%ing Thing Matters” (because it does).
EVERY detail, in every moment of every dental appointment MATTERS. What gets said, how quickly, quietly or loudly you enter a room, how you phrase bad news….it all has a real emotional impact on the person sitting on the other side.
I think the largest element of this philosophy is you MUST be able to shut off your own mind about what’s important or interesting to you, and project yourself into the mind of that cosmetic dentistry patient and see it all and feel it all they way THEY feel it.
Try it today. Go deep into the minds of your clients and see if it doesn’t change EVERYTHING for you (and more importantly ) for them!
If you are searching for cosmetic dentistry in Denver or Lakewood, or even some far off other place in Colorado (heck- we even have patients who travel from out of state), feel free to contact us. We understand the trepidation in filling out that contact us form, and wondering if it’s the right decision. We think you’ll find out VERY quickly that YOU matter to us, and we’ll make you feel that every step of the way.

Insights into a Cosmetic Dentistry career

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

I just finished breakfast with a long-term dentist friend of mine. We’ve had a standing annual breakfast meeting for about 15 years now. Time flies… As I write this I am sitting in a Starbuck’s. Not just ANY Starbuck’s, but one that used to be my old dental office. It’s actually sort of creepy. Who knew then that a little ramshackle dental building would later be converted to a neighborhood coffee hotspot.

Back in 1991 I started my first dental practice in Denver, near the DU campus. Even from the beginning, one of the first organizations I became involved with was the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. I placed my first veneers almost 20 years ago now.
Even though, the years are starting to really add up, I still enjoy cosmetic dentistry more than anything else I do. I appreciate the opportunity to change smiles and change lives. I am looking forward to the next 15 years too (though I’m fairly sure we have enough Starbuck’s now).
So if you are looking for veneers, or maybe to revitalize your smile, contact me today. I’ll even buy you a cup of Starbuck’s if you mention my old office…

Why EVERYONE needs a Cosmetic Dentist.

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

After practicing for over 21 years as a dentist in Denver, I have found methods and systems to create success for my patients. By success I mean that: pain goes away from problems, amazing smiles are created, problems are fixed and stay fixed, cavities are stopped (forever), and the anxiety about dental care is soothed.

Everyone needs a Cosmetic Dentist because, in the end, the dental work has to work well AND look good. Someday you’ll see some web pages or an article from me about why any patient that sees the orthodontist or a pediatric dentist NEEDS a cosmetic dentist. (more on those specific topics on another day). Everyone needs a cosmetic dentist because only one dentist will actually create the final smile, no matter how many other specialists are involved. He’s the one who will create it, make sure you love it, fit it so it’s comfortable and monitor it over the years so that it lasts.
Almost anyone can benefit from some improvement to their smile. Many people only need something small or simple. It can make a HUGE difference in how you like your smile. If you love your smile, then you act with more confidence, and others perceive you as happier and more attractive (listen to one of our patient’s short video story on YouTube)
From teeth whitening to cosmetic reshaping of the teeth, all the way up to veneers or a smile makeover, having a smile you LOVE is why everyone needs a cosmetic dentist.
Maybe you should have one too…contact us today.

Veneers and your Success.

Friday, May 29th, 2009

It’s been everywhere this week. Amazing smiles. Crummy smiles. People who like their smiles. People who are unhappy with theirs. People who are ready to change their smile. Stories about people who HAVE changed their smile.

I flipped on the radio this morning and the DJ’s on Alice 105.9 were in the midst of discussing their female counterpart’s smile that she disliked for years. In fact, so much so that she said, “I haven’t ordered any pictures from my wedding, because I really hate how my smile looks”. Imagine it, that huge celebration, and you don’t want any pictures of it? Anyway, she said that she had planned to get veneers and really truly sounded excited to make the change. If you find you don’t smile easily and often, you can read more about what’s involved with veneers.
Lakewood, Colorado Tooth Bonding
I had a patient in today with their kids. She had recently had some veneers finished. She smiles ALL the time now. She looks happier, she radiates contentment, and just gives off that happy aura. Another patient was in later today. She works with another patient of mine who had also finished veneers recently. In fact, you can see her finished portrait in our smile gallery. She also described how her friend just smiles all the time. What a gift for yourself and for the people around you. Don’t you find that you just want to hang around with someone like that?
I know there are a lot of concerns about the economy, and here in Denver, I have seen a number of patients inside my practice suffer job transitions. BUT, if you are fighting for that new position don’t you think you need every advantage? A great smile makes a powerful first impression. NOW is the right time to update your smile.
So here’s where the power of smiles and success seem to intersect. I’ve found myself enjoying Twitter lately. People use a small avatar and most people customize theirs with a photo of themselves. You then decide to “follow” people who look or sound interesting. You can follow me and my Tweets on my Twitter link. My premise is people who have a really broad, happy smile get more followers than someone with just a plain photo. I mean a HUGE smile from ear to ear. To me that kind of smile shows ease, confidence, happiness, and someone you just want to be around. There are numerous studies that actually show that people with great smiles actually make more money, and have more success.

Most people don’t really appreciate what can be changed in a smile. From smile makeovers to bonding, simple to involved, you can change your smile.  It is my great pleasure to be involved and watch it happen from beginning to the end.
