Veneers are great, they change smiles and lives. Over twenty years as a cosmetic dentist in Denver, I have placed MANY veneers. In fact I have fixed veneers from other offices as well.
One of my partnering services SmileVision sent me this nice summary about the current trends with veneers. The following are some advantages & disadvantages of minimal-prep or no-prep veneer cases, which dentists must be ready to deal with:
Advantages:
- Patients like the idea of not prepping making cases are easier
- Temporaries are often unnecessary, lowering the cost of treatment
- Restorations bond strongly to enamel, so these stay put
- Procedures are reversible if the results are not satisfactory
- There is minimal damage to the dental pulp
Disadvantages:
- Esthetic changes are limited
- Limited potential for color changes due to thin material
- Difficulties manufacturing, inserting and bonding the restorations
- Patient complaints about excessive bulk
- Flat esthetics due lack of room to create deep embrasures
These are the challenges each dentist must manage when making decisions about how to proceed with cosmetic cases. Success will never bee 100%, no matter which techniques are selected. Everything works in the right situation and nothing works in the wrong one.
So… the science of cosmetic dentistry really has to do with interpreting which type of veneers will work best for which patients. Some patients just want a simple improvement-these patients CAN be candidates for the no-prep veneers or Lumineers.
But… the longer I practice dentistry in Denver, I have found that largely the patients that come to see me want beautiful, close to perfect smiles, with a really natural look (visit our before and after photo gallery).
Have you ever met someone who just had teeth that were bigger than life? Or some sort of dental work that just jumped right off of their face? I think these cases are mistakes for both the patient and for cosmetic dentistry in general.
So, like a lot of things in life, one size does NOT fit all. If you are considering veneers, then first you need to find the right the right cosmetic dentist that understands the differences, and can give YOU a great explanation for what would work best for you. Contact us today, and let us help you make the right choice and get he smile you’ve been waiting for!

I read an interesting blog today. It was talking about trust, confidence and how businesses, even cosmetic dentistry, need to earn their clients respect. I think that the success of long-standing relationships comes down to excellent communication.
I am constantly looking for ways to express to my
cosmetic dentistry clients that we are here to serve them and to create the results that they are dreaming of. (you can see some of the other after photos here in our
smile gallery).
We take great efforts to have clear, back-and-forth communication so that what I anticipate for my patients, is what THEY want, and what they anticipate. For example, I am working on a very difficult
smile design. We are working on a
smile simulation to show what I have designed to correct the spaces, even large gaps in his smile. I am using
computer smile imaging to create a preview of what his new smile will look like. Then we will discuss how close that is to what HE wants.
Before we start his
veneers or
crowns, we will both have a clear image of what his new smile will look like. I will be realistic about what’s possible. I see no value in promising the impossible.
Often though, we are able to deliver the AMAZING! At the end of the day, when it’s all finished, if my patients leave
smiling and amazed, it has been a good day.

I am often ranting to my staff, or to my wife, Tracy (who just wrote her first article in Examiner.com- check it out!). I rant from time to time about some of the things I am going to do when I have time.
For instance, when I retire, I want to go to the gym for two hours a day, ride my bike like crazy, try more hot yoga, play racquetball with my boys, travel whenever possible and go to lots of hockey games.
Really what this book will be about is the thought processes behind creating excellence. I decided I am going to call this book “Every #*!%ing Thing Matters” (because it does).
EVERY detail, in every moment of every dental appointment MATTERS. What gets said, how quickly, quietly or loudly you enter a room, how you phrase bad news….it all has a real emotional impact on the person sitting on the other side.
I think the largest element of this philosophy is you MUST be able to shut off your own mind about what’s important or interesting to you, and project yourself into the mind of that
cosmetic dentistry patient and see it all and feel it all they way THEY feel it.
Try it today. Go deep into the minds of your clients and see if it doesn’t change EVERYTHING for you (and more importantly ) for them!
If you are searching for
cosmetic dentistry in
Denver or Lakewood, or even some far off other place in
Colorado (heck- we even have patients who travel from out of state), feel free to contact us. We understand the trepidation in filling out that
contact us form, and wondering if it’s the right decision. We think you’ll find out VERY quickly that YOU matter to us, and we’ll make you feel that every step of the way.

Why is there a finish line at races? You know that classic tape that you see the winning runner throw up their arms and run through? I’m not really a runner, and I haven’t really competed and won many races. SO…does the finish line matter for anyone else in the race besides the winner?
You betcha it does! Even though I love being a
cosmetic dentist in Denver, I have some other hobbies. I really enjoy bicycling. In fact some of my favorite accomplishments were riding in the Triple Bypass. This is a loooong ride. It’s 120 miles; it goes up and down mountain passes. Like in
cosmetic dentistry, the proper plan allows for success. In
smile makeovers, I take photos, make
computer smile simulations, and mock-ups of what the final result ought to be. Planning is king.
I digress… One of my neighbors told me about his experience on this ride one year. he told me about starting strong, getting up the first mountain pass, then later starting up Loveland Pass, then…BONK. Cramps, tired legs that just couldn’t produce enough to get up and over the pass. He had to get off his bike wait for the “sag wagon,” the van that then shuttles you all the way to the end in Beaver Creek. I imagine getting out of the van at the finish line was not the thrill of victory, but more like the agony of defeat.
I learned from his comments. I had a very intensive training program and then more importantly a PLAN on race day to get to the finish line. I have ridden this race twice. I am positive that I will never be the first one over the finish line. BUT, I have finished both times I rode it. The feeling at the finish line after truly finishing the race was awesome! It was worth all of the training and the preparation.
There is no sag wagon in
dentistry. (The closest thing would be dentures…) There is no shuttle to the end, and then just a little bit of shame. In
dentistry, there are no shortcuts. Unfortunately, once the problems get started, they just get bigger and bigger.
The race of keeping your teeth your entire life MATTERS. So YES, the finish line matters.

In reading the newspaper today, I came across an article that described the demise of multiple Japanese industries. The one that caught my eye the most was about Toyota. Somehow this icon of quality and cost controls, innovation and domination just slipped off of the map.
Here’s my take on what went wrong: 1) Resting on your laurels. Just because you did it right and well last time doesn’t mean that you will have success in the next opportunity. In
cosmetic dentistry, the quality of the final result for YOU, this time, is all that matters. If I have 100 or 1000 other
veneers or
smile makeovers, and you aren’t excited with YOURS, then the laurels really don’t matter.
2) You can’t afford to stop being fanatical about quality. FANATICAL, obsessive, relentless, unyielding, tireless…I think you get the idea. In our
Denver cosmetic dentist office, every tooth, every smile, every examination, every experience matters!
My staff knows I an obsessive about the results and the experience that our patients receive.
3) Do it right EVERY time. There is no room for “we’ll just let this slide a little bit.” Every encounter with a patient needs to go as orchestrated, so that they receive the results they were hoping for. We fight every day to make sure we are not losing sight of what each of our clients are expecting from us. (and more importantly-to go beyond what they are expecting).
SO, when is quality not important? The answer is it it constantly, unendingly important. (If you are looking for this sort of experience, then
contact us today.)

I just finished breakfast with a long-term dentist friend of mine. We’ve had a standing annual breakfast meeting for about 15 years now. Time flies… As I write this I am sitting in a Starbuck’s. Not just ANY Starbuck’s, but one that used to be my old dental office. It’s actually sort of creepy. Who knew then that a little ramshackle dental building would later be converted to a neighborhood coffee hotspot.
Even though, the years are starting to really add up, I still enjoy c
osmetic dentistry more than anything else I do. I appreciate the opportunity to change smiles and change lives. I am looking forward to the next 15 years too (though I’m fairly sure we have enough Starbuck’s now).
So if you are looking for veneers, or maybe to revitalize your smile,
contact me today. I’ll even buy you a cup of Starbuck’s if you mention my old office…

After practicing for over 21 years as a dentist in Denver, I have found methods and systems to create success for my patients. By success I mean that: pain goes away from problems, amazing smiles are created, problems are fixed and stay fixed, cavities are stopped (forever), and the anxiety about dental care is soothed.
Everyone needs a
Cosmetic Dentist because, in the end, the dental work has to work well AND look good. Someday you’ll see some web pages or an article from me about why
any patient that sees the orthodontist or a pediatric dentist NEEDS a cosmetic dentist. (more on those specific topics on another day). Everyone needs a cosmetic dentist because only one dentist will actually create the final smile, no matter how many other specialists are involved. He’s the one who will create it, make sure you love it, fit it so it’s comfortable and monitor it over the years so that it lasts.
Almost
anyone can benefit from some improvement to their smile. Many people only need something small or simple. It can make a HUGE difference in how you like your smile. If you love your smile, then you act with more confidence, and others perceive you as happier and more attractive (listen to one of our
patient’s short video story on YouTube)
