Robotic Block
I just want to let you know that the future is here, now. I’m using one of my latest, greatest technology findings. I am using MacSpeech Dictate. I’m using a microphone to dictate my thoughts and blog today, My laptop is transcribing printed asked. Pretty cool! (except there are still typos…).
Here’s why I see this as an advantage: many of my blogs are written in my head, and frankly, take way too long to sit down, type them all out, and edit them. I know for me, I can dictate the thoughts and concepts that are in my head WAY Faster than how fast I can type.
So the benefit for you, is that I can get more complicated information down more quickly. It will also let me add more pages and entries, more rapidly.
And along the way I’ll probably mess with it by adding some words like “particle bladder” just to see what it comes out with.
So I encourage you to sit back, get a cold drink, and get ready for more blogs, more information, and really, more helpful tools to help you understand cosmetic dentistry.
So, I have to figure out whether the computer is an idiot or my dictation is a little peculiar, but for now I have decided to sit back talk to myself and have a good time!
So enjoy this first blog, “type O.’s and all. Knowing I’d never touched the keys in creating this!

When was the last time you saw “rabid” anything? I mean, look at this dog-he exemplifies it: tongue hanging way out, ears peaked, eyes focused in on something in the distance. He’s ready to go.
I guess that one of my passions in life is cosmetic dentistry. Over the years, I have learned to keep my tongue from hanging out, or drool on anyone, and especially to not bite anyone, but other than that, it’s the same for me as that dog in the photo. I’m ready to go!
There are times when it seems that everything I am thinking about has to do with advancing
cosmetic dentistry in Denver. I am really looking forward to attending the premier event in
cosmetic dentistry next week. The
AACD (
American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry) will be having their 26th annual session in Dallas, TX.
It will be an inspirational week with great speakers, great tips on advancing my skills as a
cosmetic dentist, and great people who love what they do. I am also enjoying having more involvement in this organization. I will be serving as a New Member Concierge. Like any big meeting, there are a few ins and outs, and my role is to help some new members get the best stuff out of the meeting.
I have also been invited to serve as an Internal Scout for the meeting. Cool, they have asked me to give my unedited, candid assessment of certain portions of the meeting. I CAN do that.
I was speaking with one of my business partners last week. He commented on how it seemed that my practice had really taken to heart the whole concept of “
experience engineering“. I take that concept to mean: that we understand what our clients want, and we have changed how things work internally in order to create the best possible experience for them.
So serving as a Scout, I think I understand what the experience OUGHT to look like. (And I’ll give my two cents about how it actually goes). Beyond that, I look forward to the opportunity to add constructive comments about how to keep making this meeting better and better.
I am glad to be part of this group, and I am already looking forward to stretching my mind, and contributing as well. (And I am fairly certain, that no one will get hurt!)

Simply put: Everyone is not a cosmetic dentist.
I appreciate the opportunity to invade your thoughts for a few moments with
my blogs. After practicing for over twenty years as a
cosmetic dentist in Denver, I find I have a lot of opinions about how
cosmetic dentistry is done.
I think there is a lot to the adage: “If you can’t say something nice about someone, then don’t say anything at all”. I have had some great mentors in
cosmetic dentistry along the way. The GREAT ones, were not only outstanding clinical
dentists, but beyond that they were a class act: in how they spoke, in how they handled “dumb” questions, and in how they taught. Those are the characteristics that I aspire to.
I rarely make negative comments about other dentists. I don’t think that serves the
profession of dentistry very well, and also, it puts patients to the side of the conversation, rather than in the middle where they should be.
to be, many TRY to be, but few actually produce amazing smiles, or perform profound services. I saw a gentlemen for a consultation recently. he had BIG spaces between many of his teeth. When he grew up, some of the teeth moved into the wrong spots. MANY difficult alignment problems. A very difficult plan.
A real
cosmetic dentist has the goal to create a REAL result. A smile that will fit that person’s personality and lifestyle. When the
veneers are done, our patient ought to feel like WOW, that’s amazing. I can’t believe I waited this long to have this done!
For this gentleman, his care starts with the right smile design. It’s my job to listen to him, find out what he REALLY wants, and find the easiest route to deliver it to him. The smile design process has to include: his preferences, comfort options during his care, and clear communication about what the results are predicted to look like (by using a smile simulation).

Why is there SO much average to below-average information about cosmetic dentistry? Why is there such a volume of material out there on Google, Bing, Yahoo, Aol and the rest of the internet, and why is there really so little real helpful information?
The answer lies in the fact that MANY people are trying to place themselves high in the internet searches. There are a LOT of people writing blogs and posting information on the web. I propose to you that very little of it is actually written by
dentists, and most of it is written by companies trying to just help websites move up in the rankings game.
I suggest that much of what is out there on the web, is not
expert advice or expert information. In fact, it seems to me that much of it is taken from one page, run through the re-write blender and then spit out on a new page.
I write my own
blogs. Occasionally, I have a company that writes additional content for me, but I supervise what gets posted.
Our
dental website won a gold MarCom award last year for writing, and also a platinum award for overall
website. I believe it was due in part to the personalization that we built into the site.
That’s how I approach
cosmetic dentistry-personally. What’s right for one person, might not be just what the other person is looking for. Another big key for services like
smile makeovers or
veneers is the communication.

Cosmetic dentistry is changing all the time. There are new techniques every year that allow more options for a smile makeover, or a new way to do veneers. We already have great technology such as smile simulations, to help patients preview what their smile COULD like like before they start anything. We have spent a lot of time building our before and after smile gallery, in hopes that you can see real people, and their real transformations. All of these advancements make it easier to get amazing results!
What’s new in
cosmetic dentistry TODAY? Well, the largest worldwide dental association of cosmetic dentistry, the
American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has unveiled it’s new look and brand. (In fact I am a “sustaining” member, which means that I have passed the written examination for accreditation in cosmetic dentistry-here is the new logo they sent me:)
What’s also exciting is that the annual meeting of this group is upcoming soon- April 27 through May 1, 2010- and I’ll be there. In fact I’m excited, because I will have the opportunity to represent my local chapter, the Colorado Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. I am looking forward to the inspiration of being around the best
cosmetic dentists in the world, and bringing back new additions for our cosmetic patients. There are great options now, but even more coming soon!

Hey, I want to let you in on a little secret I learned this weekend. There is this thing called the internet and you can find ANYTHING on it! OK, so it’s not new anymore, but I am amazed at the abilities to find cool things, and even more than that, TALK about, visit and see cool things.
My wife Tracy is a writer, she recently launched
her new site (
www.TracyGreenhalgh.com). She’s written for
5280 Magazine and a number of other publications around Denver. She’s got a knack for finding the heart-stories and connecting with people,
stop by her site-you’ll enjoy the stories! This has nothing to do with c
osmetic dentistry, except that she is a great writer and contributed TONS to this website-thanks Tracy!
Wow- this internet thing is going to be HUGE! Thanks for humoring me, I hope you enjoy my blogs, I enjoy writing them.
Contact me if you have something you’d like to hear about. Oh, and you can
visit me on Facebook too!

I was sitting at the Colorado Academy of
Cosmetic Dentistry meeting last night. We hosted a speaker with a great research background on why all of our
cosmetic dentistry materials work well, and how to get better results.
I have had the opportunity to listen to some of the best dentists in the world, and here is what I have found: thoughtful attention to how a system works and impeccable attention to detail produce
exceptional results. Anything less than this produces failure, pain, or disappointing
cosmetic dentistry.
I am fanatical with my staff about the importance of all of the little details. EVERY step is important, every step has a critical role, every step has to be orchestrated with precision.
At our meeting today before we saw our patients, I reminded everyone to “remember that all that matters to each of our patients today is THEIR appointment. They don’t care what happened before or after them. They don’t care if you hit traffic on the way to work. All they care about is that you pay attention to them.”
What they want from
me and
my dental staff is complete attention and understanding of what is important to them. They want to know they we are supremely concerned with how comfortable their dental appointment is TODAY. They want to be positive that we know exactly what tooth we are working on, and that we are doing it for a good reason. They want to know that they will be better off for subjecting themselves to a dental procedure. They want to know that afterwards they will feel better or that their teeth will look better. They want to know what their
dental appointment will costs-without surprises.

I am looking forward to attending the seminar tonight entitled; Stem Cells: Emerging medical and dental therapies and the dental profession. I have been interested in the potential of stem cells for years now. In fact a number of years ago Christine Chang of Channel 7 News did a segment featuring our dental office (here’s the dental stem cell video).
I am currently working with two different companies (for example, BioEden and StemSave) that help patients collect stem cells from their children and even from wisdom teeth. The thought is to preserve these cells that can have the potential to regrow certain tissues (such as dental enamel). As these sciences develop I think those who save these cells now, will have some huge opportunities to treat some of their own complex medical problems in the future. There is no better tissue match than your own, or your direct family members.
While it’s yet to be seen how stem cells will help in cosmetic dentistry, any advances that help people preserve their own teeth, or provide new options to repair them, ultimately leads to a better, healthier smile.
So, I’m sure I’ll have some new information for you about advances in dental care and how to use stem cells. It may be possible to collect them from you, your kids or even grandchildren. For now, the first step will be to contact my office so that we can help you collect and preserve these precious cells.

What’s new right now? EVERYTHING! There really is a lot happening in modern dentistry right now. Dental implant technology is exploding and becoming more and more commonplace. Many people have either had dental implants or know someone who has. We will keep seeing advancements that make it easier and easier to have dental implants (see our short dental implant video). Once of the best innovations recently has been the process called “All on four”.
Four implants are used to replace all of the teeth on one jaw. They can be done rapidly and in some circumstances, patients can have their new implant teeth or bridge the same day. In the past it often required six to eight implants, possibly sinus surgery or sinus bone grafting, then wait six to twelve months, then wait another two to three months to make the new teeth.
We can look forward to more and more advancements like this, ones that make lessen the complexity, lessen the amount of surgery necessary and shorten the time that it takes until you receive your final teeth. And now more than ever before, we have great
cosmetic dentistry to connect to those implants, making them not only work well, but look better than ever!
Contact us today to learn more about how implants can fit your lifestyle. we are happy to offer dental implant
dentistry in Denver.

You just never know where the roads you are on life are going to take you. As I look back over 22 years in
dentistry in denver I am always amazed at the cool people I get to meet.
My wife told me today, someone came up to her after her exercise class and said “Hey, I saw your picture at Wal-Mart”. OK- how exactly do you respond to that? What this lady really meant was that she saw my wife’s picture at Costco (a little better, at least to me!).
Last year we started work on our
website. I knew I wanted it to have a certain look. I searched a LOT of options and photographers. I met (my now good friend) Mark of
Mark Cafiero Photography (
his blog, it’s hilarious). Mark ROCKS, there are a lot of nice photos in the world, but Mark has the eye. We immediately enrolled him to take our
website photos, our
staff photos, inside
our office, some really cool portraits of our patients who finished cosmetic dentistry (see our
before and after gallery) and even our family portraits.
Anyway, the road turns like this: Mark has since started a business with Costco to take cool, original, outdoor family photos (visit them here:
http://www.neversaycheese.com/). He used a number of images of my family and I in some of the promotions with Costco.
I am reading
his blog today, and BAM, there’s my wife and I at the bottom of one of his mailers… (I AM happy that Mark is not doing a Wal-Mart promotion, otherwise I’d have to get some Billy-Bob teeth…)
SO, look for the best people you can find, then do as much work, pleasure, hanging out or whatever you can with them.
You never know what’s around the NEXT bend…
